1.1 HISTORY OF THE PROGRAMME:

The department of Economics and Development Studies was one of departments created in 1999 at the inception of Igbinedion University Okada. The curriculum for the department was prepared through the combined efforts of eminent professors in Economics engaged as consultants and pioneer staff of the department. Since 1999 the curriculum has been implemented adhering to the National Universities Commission approved guidelines to achieve the goal of graduating sound Economists with Bachelor of Science degree in Economics and Development Studies in line with the philosophy and objectives of establishing the Department.

1.2 PHILOSOPHY AND MISSION:

The philosophy and mission statement underlying the Economics and Development studies programme of Igbinedion  University Okada is to produce graduates equipped with critical skills and abilities to: abstract using simplified models that identify the essence of a problem; analyse and reason both deductively and inductively; marshall evidence, assimilate structure and analyse qualitative and quantitative data; communicate concisely the results to a wide audience, including  those with no training in Economics; think critically about the limits of one’s  analysis in a broader socio – economic context; and draw economic policy inferences and to recognize the potential constraints in their implementation. In line with international standards, the philosophy of the Department of Economics and Development Studies is to train and graduate students imbued with a sound theoretical and practical foundation. The students will be expected, not only to make specific contributions to the field of economics & development studies and achieve their professional goals, but to make a difference in Nigerian, African and the world economies. The degree programme will equip the students for the wide range of opportunities in economics, finance, management as well as government in the contribution to development of Nigeria, Africa and the global community in the field of Social Sciences in general and in the various sub-fields of Economics and Development in Particular.

1.3 OBJECTIVES OF THE DEGREE PROGRAMME

The major aims and objectives of Economics and Development Studies programme are to:

  • Instil in students a sound knowledge of Economics and Studies, an appreciation of its applications in different socio-cultural contexts and to involve the students in intellectually stimulating and satisfying experiences of learning and studying;
  • Provide students with broad and well balanced theories and    methods in economics and development studies;
  • Provide training in the principles of economics and development studies with their application appropriate to the type of degree concerned: single, joint and combined studies;
  • Provide a firm foundation of knowledge about the workings of an economy and to develop the relevant skills for the constructive use of that knowledge in a range of settings;
  • Develop in students the ability to apply the analytical tools, knowledge and skills acquired to solution of societies’ economic problems,
  • Equip students with appropriate tools of analyses to tackle issues and problems of economic policies;
  • Develop in students a range of useful competencies for employment, whether public, private or self-employment;
  • Cultivate in students the ability to apply their knowledge and skills in economics and development studies to the understanding    and solution of societal problems in Nigeria and elsewhere;
  • Provide students with the knowledge and skill base, from which they can proceed to further studies in Economics, related areas or in interdisciplinary areas that involve Economics;
  • Generate in students an appreciation of the economic dimensions of wider social and political issues
  • To produce honest and independent minded graduates with the highest ideals of academic excellence and ethical standards, who would aspire to leadership positions in the country.

Learning Outcomes

(a) Core of Subject Knowledge

(i)      The Bachelors (Honours) degree programme in Economics and Development studies at Igbinedion University, Okada, ensures that students become conversant with all the main aspects of challenges to development and how the nature of the economy impacts on this;

(ii)     Core theories and concepts in Economics and Development;

(iii)   Methods of data collection and processing, both qualitative and quantitative;

(iv)    Statistical methods   in Economics and Development studies;

(v)     Appropriate information technology for adequate functioning in the digital age.

(b) Competencies and Skills

A graduate of Economics and Development studies at the Bachelors Honours level at Igbinedion University, Okada, should have the following competencies and skills:

(i)      Ability to demonstrate adequate knowledge and understanding of the essentials in all the subject knowledge/areas identified;

(ii)     Ability to apply such knowledge and understanding to the solution of social problems and development challenges;

(iii)    Ability to recognize and analyze new problems and plan strategies for their solution;

(iv)   Communication skills in presenting scientific research materials and arguments clearly and correctly, both orally and in writing   to a range of   audiences;

(v)     Competence in statistical and qualitative data processing skills;

(vi)   Competence in the use of information technology such as word processing, Internet communication, information retrieval through on-line computer searches, etc;

(vii)     Subject-specific and transferable skills which allow for the pursuit of a wide range of careers after graduation;

(c) Behavioural Attributes

A graduate in Economics and Development Studies should be able to demonstrate adequate:

(i)      Knowledge of a wide-range of research methods in economics and development studies;

(ii)     General knowledge in the various branches of economics and development studies;

(iii)   Computing skills;

(iv)    Study skills needed for further studies;

(v)     Ability to function entrepreneurially in a wide range of career choices; and

(vi)    Ability to apply critical scientific reasoning to problem solving.

1.4 UNDERGRADUATE CURRICULUM:

Specific Objectives: A major aim of the department is to offer a sound educational preparation in Economics and Development Studies to all students enrolled in the department and gives them a firm foundation for effective participation in the society of man in general and Nigeria in particular as Economists, Bankers, Financiers, Administrators, Academics, Management Executives and allied professionals. To this end the department offers academic programme leading to the award of Bachelor of Science Degree in Economics and Development Studies.

 1.5 ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS:

  1. a) Four Year B.Sc. Programme:- Admission through Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME)
  • Possession of Senior Secondary School Certificate (SSC), General Certificate of Education (GCE), National Examination Council (NECO) or their equivalents with at least five Credit Passes in relevant subjects, at not more than two sittings including Mathematics, English and Economics.
  • Candidates must have acceptable passes in UTME.
  • Candidates must be successful in the screening test conducted by Igbinedion University Okada.

(b)        Three Year B.Sc. Programme- Direct Entry

  • Candidates for Direct Entry Admission shall possess five credits passes in GCE, SSC, NECO subjects or their equivalents at ordinary level (O/L), and at least two subjects at advanced level (A/L) as well as N.C.E. or ND in relevant fields provided that such passes are not at more than two sittings of the examinations. For emphasis, credit passes in English Language, Mathematics and Economics are required.


POST GRADUATE PROGREMMES

 1.0 PHILOSOPHY AND SCOPE:

The postgraduate programme in Economics seeks to foster the spirit of enquiry through training in research in an atmosphere of intellectual independence and individual creativity. It also advances through instruction and course work, an in depth understanding of elementary concepts and their applications to new problems, challenges, and opportunities. In doing so, we realize that the scholar’s success is directly related to the depth of mastery of basic principles and the application of these principles. Although the programme seeks a high degree of specialization, such must be achieved within the context of extending mental horizons, producing new orientations, and developing a depth of understanding in the relevant discipline

1.1 OBJECTIVES:

The objective of the postgraduate programmes in Economics shall flow from the general objectives of the college of Arts and Social Sciences and award of qualifications of the programmes shall be governed by the university and school of postgraduate studies regulations. The main objectives of the programme are to develop highly competent and versatile professional economists through the provision of relevant academic and professional courses which are required in order to meet the development challenges in the Nigerian economy in the context of globalization. Specifically, the programmes are designed to rigorously train highly competent personnel for academic career and groom middle and top management personnel in the areas of energy and petroleum, manufacturing, industry, banking and finance.

 1.2 PROGRAMMES:

The academic Postgraduate Diploma Degree programme confers a degree of postgraduate of diploma (PGD) and links directly the Master’s Degree programme. The Master’s Degree programme which confers a degree of Masters of Science (M. Sc), links directly the Doctor of philosophy Degree (Ph. D) programmes and, therefore provide the entry points for academic and research career in Economics. Thus, the Masters of Science Degree (M. Sc) and the Doctor of Philosophy Degree (Ph. D) programmes constitute the core of postgraduate programmes in Economics.


1.3.0 ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS:

Postgraduate Diploma Degree (PGD). Requirement for admission are as specified in the General Regulations of the postgraduate school. In addition, candidates must:

  1. Satisfy the matriculation requirements of the University including English Language and Mathematics.
  2. Obtain a Bachelor’s degree in Economics and any other discipline from an approved university whose Economics programme is accredited by the NUC
  3. Obtain a minimum of a third class or pass degree and or a higher national diploma (HND) from a cognate discipline awarded by a recognized institution

1.3.1 DURATION OF PGD PROGRAMME:

A full time postgraduate diploma degree (PGD) programme shall run for a minimum of twelve (12) months, that is, one (1) year course work made up of two semesters, and a research project.

1.3.2 DURATION OF MSc PROGRAMME:

A full time Master’s programme shall run for a minimum of eighteen (18) months with one (1) year course work made up of two semesters, and six (6) months of research project or thesis and perhaps seminars.

1.4 Doctor of Philosophy (Ph. D) in Economics

The key objective of the Ph. D programmes is to train and develop highly professional economists, preparing and building up their independent intellectual capacity for sustainable and creative useful careers in teaching and research in higher institutions of learning, research and administration in research institutes, government, nongovernmental/national and international organizations, business organizations and specialized consultancy services.

The Ph. D programme shall consist of three components, namely, a course work, thesis writing and oral defense. The course work would be for one academic session, and shall be taken only on a full time basis. No candidate shall be accepted as a part-time Ph. D student who has not successfully completed the course work. Where appropriate, all courses failed must be repeated and passed. The pass mark for each course taken shall be 50 percent.

Each candidate shall submit appropriate number of bound copies of a supervised thesis as the final requirement for the award of the Ph. D degree. The supervised thesis must be based on original research, which must be orally defended successfully before an appropriate panel of examiners. The thesis must represent a specific original contribution to economic knowledge. Prior to submission, each Ph. D student must give at least two seminars.

1.4.1   ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS.

The admission is either through M.PHIL or Direct Entry into the Ph.D programme.

          All candidates must

  1. Possess the University minimum requirement for B. Sc degree in Economics
  2. Have obtained a Bachelor’s degree from an approved University whose Economics programme is accredited by NUC.
  3. Have a minimum of a Second Class Lower degree in the discipline
  4. Hold a Master’s degree in Economics with a CGPA of at least 4.00 on a 5.0 point scale
  5. Submit a brief satisfactory statement of intended area of research.


1.4.2      DURATION OF THE PROGRAMME

The duration of the M. Phil. Programme shall be one (1) year while that of the Ph. D   programme shall be:

Full-Time: A minimum of three (3) years and a maximum of four (4) years

Part-Time: A minimum of six (6) years and a maximum of six (6) years.
